Recently, we showed that in England 94.6% of all gp surgeries failed to comply with the equality act, by refusing to provide reasonable alternative methods for deaf and HI people, to facilitate making a simple gp appointment. In Wales the figure for the 7 health boards suggest 97.3% of all welsh GP surgeries also failed to comply. In short in Wales, you need to phone for an appointment or call into the surgery. But over 300 welsh GP surgeries continued to use premium rate telephone numbers, and in many rural areas, GP surgeries only allow appointments to be made during certain times of the day. These times do not always concur with the rural bus service timetables, so waits for patients appointments can be twice as lengthy..DARG asked several fire service HQ's the $64000 question. How do deaf people asleep in a hotel become aware that the hotel fire alarm has gone off ?
Each fire service chief's responses told DARG that was not their problem The fire service is only responsible for monitoring the fire regulations act i.e. do the hotels/bb's comply with regulations re fire alarms, exit doors etc.
DARG then asked 16 hotels: Do you provide deaf guests with pillow alerting/vibrating equipment ? The Answer was no, and cost stated as usually the reason.
Without an in-depth study, DARG think a there is a real risk deaf people could die in an hotel, simply because hotels are unaware of deaf problems and will not spend money on the necessary deaf vibrating technology. They simply assume the night porter will use his staff key to enter room and wake person up in time. DARG are finding that more and more churches of all denominations, are also failing to provide deaf people with alternative methods of accessing the service i.e. knowing what hymn is about to be sung.
If you could bring these issues to the attention of your blog readers it would help our campaigns.
